Photo Recipe | {Creating a Soft, Dreamy Effect}

April 18, 2014  •  Leave a Comment

Any photographer with children knows how tough it can be to get your own kids to cooperate for a personal session!

Many times I get closed eyes and tongues out!  My youngest likes to flash his tummy, and my oldest doesn't love being in front of the camera.

However, these two delighted me on our recent vacation and sat still (for a few brief moments) for me to take a few photographs.

I like to capture them relaxed together because their love can be seen in calm moments.  They are a tangled and wild mess most of the time.

But, not here.

The before picture (above) includes some editing in Lightroom 4 and a few tweaks in Photoshop.

I wanted the image to have a softer, more dreamy feel, so I decided to apply the Enchantment texture from Love that Shot's Fairytale Collection.

I applied the effect at 50% opacity (soft light).

The texture created a nice vignette and added some richness to the photo.

However, to create an area of soft light on them, I masked the effect off of the boys (below).

To add a touch of softness and haze, I applied the Chamomile Veil from Love that Shot's Simplicity Collection.

I liked it around 35% with no masking.

The final image:

The effect is a subtle softness that enhances the image without distraction.
